REIGATE CYCLING CENTRE - 21 MARCH 2015
Another good start to the racing season and the Womens Team Series was this promotion by the Eagle RC , always a good field for this race and active in spite of the very cold wind.
Let 2nd place Louise Mahe tell the tale of the race.
"Theres always a mix of nerves and excitement as you to take to the start line of the first biggish race of the season and with a large field I tried to keep near the front early on. As two riders clipped off the front on the "Hoggenberg", in pursuit of the first prime, I thought I'd follow. Even though it was rather early I carried on my effort as the other two sat up and soon had a respectable gap. The wind was blowing hard and I was half expecting to get swept up by the bunch, but with my Ikon Mazda teammates marking other moves the gap wavered but stuck. Three riders then chipped across and we began working together, the bunch seemed to loose interest in chasing and we opened up a bigger gap. By the final lap there were three of us and with two riders from the Army team, who were very strong, it was going to be tough. Unfortunately I waited a little too long to launch my sprint on the final time up the hoggenberg and one army girl jumped hard, taking the win by a good few bike lengths.
It great to see the team series, in its 15th year, going from strength to strength. Was impressed to see so many 4th cats"
Winner Elizabeth Jane Harris had this to say.
"With the first race of the Women's Team Series it was nice to see such a big field; the race itself it was a good peleton but halfway through I got away with my team mate Chanel and Louise, we worked well together, it was not a technical course. Coming to the finish my coach had me visualizing the finish so it was a case of putting that into action, I had my team mate lead me out which was good. This is my first race in the Team Series.aking to the line in the support event before our race, this really shows the depth in women's racing these days!"

SUPPORTING WOMENS RACE
In the support 4th category race it was pleasing as Louise says to see so many riders braving the icy winds, it was a good decision to have two races for senior women and a model for the future.
A good early breakway then a chase by a small group keaving eventually two riders in the lead with 6 laps remaining and a final sprint, just what all good races are made for especially for winner Sophie it was her first win for her new club Squadra Donne.

Emily Barnes was the winner of the first round in the Shutt VR Women’s Team Series held at the Redbridge Cycle Centre on Good Friday
Shutt Velo Rapide sponsored Women’s Team Race Series got of to a great start at the Eagle RC organised first event at the Hog Hill circuit when 64 riders lined up on what is always a hard racing course in sunshine but that pesky wind always blowing with Emily Barnes – Corvida Allpress winning in a bunch sprint – and a good share of the £400 in prize money on offer.
The biggest field ever for the start to a season saw the various levels of fitness beginning to tell as the fast moving bunch gradually lost riders from the rear until with halfway covered there were 40 riders in the main bunch, perhaps mainly due to the 3 cash primes that organiser Chris Baldwin had put up – Claire Galloway – For Viorad winning two of them.

Twickenham CC Dave Peck Memorial, Sunday 14th April
Alice Barnes won the Twickenham CC Dave Peck Memorial from a small break in the Shutt RV Women’s Team Series race in Surrey
The race held in sunny but windy conditions was a very aggressive race but it wasn’t until after a few laps that a break managed to stick with Hannah Barnes, Lydia Boylan, Amy Gornall, Louise Mahe, Clemence Copie and Maryka Sennema.
Without a Matrix Fitness rider however the break was looking doomed even though the chase early on wasn’t managing to close the gap down. Towards the end of the thirteen laps however, the break lost riders and its lead and the race came together.
It was onto an even hillier circuit then and under the pressure of Masters Champion (30-35) Natalie Creswick a new break formed and it was this one that had all the right teams represented and was let go by the bunch. The reputation of second year Alice Barnes though was well known and more attacks followed but they were unable to displodge the Epic-Scott rider who was too quick in the sprint ahead of Corrine Hall and Natalie Creswick.

Interview with Winner Alice Barnes
Alice Barnes: Younger sister of Hannah who spent most of the race in the ‘early’ break, Alice is a mountain biker who is giving the road a try and doing very well thank you very much. Alice spent the first half of the race in the peloton. “I had a teammate in the break early on in the race and Matrix didn’t so it was up to us, Mule Bar and MG Maxifuel to try and control the chase by Matrix.”
“The break came back and then I found myself in the next one that stayed away. I have been on an Olympic Development Programme training camp all week and was the only girl on it so I was being destroyed by the boys up all the hills. I didn’t think I’d have it me at the end there but I managed to find a sprint to win the race which was pretty good.”
Alice admitted in the break there were times when she couldn’t even go through and because of that didn’t think there was going to be any legs left for the sprint and added she feels lucky to have had a sprint left. Talking about that sprint, at the top of a long climb (Staple hill circuit) Alice says “there was a headwind so I stayed on the wheels for as long possible and I didn’t want to go to early because I knew the hill was a long one”.
“The climb dips near the top so I spun (junior gears) my legs out and went for it”. Went for it indeed as Alice came past me 50 metres form the line already a few lengths clear of the rest. While her main discipline is mountain biking, Alice has done a little road with a race at Hog Hill (Redbridge Cycle Centre) recently and is off to Europe for a race there with her team Scott Contessa.
“I didn’t do any road races last year while I focused on mountain biking and wanted to give it a go this year. This is my first ever race on the open road so it’s quite exciting”.

Round 2 -Twickenham CC Dave Peck Memorial Ladies Race, 15th April
The ever aggressive Natalie Creswick won the Twickenham CC round of the ShuttVR Women’s Team Series by over three minutes after a long solo effort.
For organiser Lisa West and her Twickenham CC team, the ghost of 2011 was well and truly laid when a storming Natalie Creswick, MuleBar rode away from the rest of the field to win the 2nd event in the Shutt VR sponsored Women's Team Race Series by a massive margin of 3 minutes to crown a good days racing and a perfect tribute to the late Dave Peck who was Club Chairman of Twickenham CC - Natalie of course is still a member of the organising club.
In fact if this were a television play, the perfect script would be for World Champion Lucy Garner to follow Natalie and take 2nd place..... and for Dave's partner Solvieg to finish the race!
The promoting club had put together a worthy course using a smaller 5 kilometre circuit that was covered 13 times before moving to the finishing course that featured Staple Hill for a further 5 laps of this 8 kilometre circuit with a full field lining up in sunny but cold weather with a strong wind later causing some problems from the less fit.
With just one lap of the first circuit covered Annabel Simpson, Matrix Fitness-Prendas jumped away and was very soon followed by Creswick and these two had a gap; they pressed home and gradually building up a useful gap that never really got beyond 40 seconds.
Entering the second circuit the gap was down to a bunch attractive 14 seconds but then Annabel just blew not being able to hold the rampant Creswick and from then on the lead just grew and grew as a combination of a strong Natalie and a bunch that were now thinking of 2nd place combined although perhaps more of the former.
Natalie was able to cross the winning line with arms aloft along a funnel of spectators and Twickenham CC club members for a terrific win. The bunch came storming up Staple Hill with Lucy Garner just holding off 3rd placed Amy Roberts, Scott Contesa Epic.
After the race Natalie Creswick said "This was a good circuit and certainly challenging; Annabel attacked on the first hill and I got across to her, looked around and saw that we were on our own. Winning this race means a lot to me as I am still a Twickenham CC member and Dave was a big influence on my racing career. I am so pleased that Dave's partner Solvieg was out on the course in his memory".
Annabel Simpson's comments as she sat in the Matrix Fitness car were succient. "That Creswick is an animal!"
Final word goes to the hard working Lisa West "I am estatic. It was an exciting race and I am really pleased with the whole day - no crashes! Everyone was racing today"

Round 5 - Oakley Village Road Race
The Perfect Win
Breaking out of the bunch on the final lap, Claire Galloway (ForViored RT) timed her effort to perfection to win Hillingdon CC’s round of the Women’s Series at Oakley.
The four-lap race was run off in very wet conditions with a number of rainstorms hitting the area, and the field split early on to leave a leading pack of around 30 riders at the end of the first lap with a number of smaller groups chasing.
The lap primes were taken by Amy Hill (Abergavenny CC) and Jo Tindley (VC St Raphael) before, with another rainstorm rolling in, the bunch took the bell together at the start of the last 14.5-km lap.
Galloway, 25, the silver medallist in the national 10-mile time trial championship, showed her strength to jump clear and, with a gap of 100 metres as the bunch wound up for the sprint, held on to win from Emily Kay (Scott Contessa-Epic) and local rider Harriet Owen (Node 4-Giordana) in a blanket finish for second to sixth places.
The supporting men’s race was run off in drier conditions and went to Dave Starkey (Fred Williams Cycles), who also outwitted the rest by attacking a kilometre from the finish to win on his own.

Scott Contessa on top in Banbury
Elinor Barker wins ahead of Natalie Creswick and World Champion Lucy Garner in Banbury Star Road Race.
In the 4th round of the Shutt Velo Rapide sponsored Women's Team Race Series Elinor Barker, Scott Contessa Epic outsprinted her breakaway companion Natalie Creswick, Mule Bar Girl to win a tough race superbly organised by Dave Anson and the Banbury Star CC in what has become typical Bank Holiday weather - rain and cold.
The main obstacle on the course was the tough Knowle hill, certainly the toughest climb faced so far this season by Team Series riders; with the continuous rain making conditions even harder the race broke up early with 3 main groups on the road and although two of the groups merged it broke again on the climb of the Knowle.
One of the topics of conversation at race headquarters was how would the juniors fare on a course that was any but flat but taking their race fitness from the 2 Days of Bedford and carrying this onto an excellent course that is just made for racing proved that the top level of our women's sport continues to grow.
A big WELL DONE to the Banbury Star CC for organising a superb race on what was their first team Series event; extra sponsorship came from Bikefood.

Duncan Murray Wines Road Race, Nazeby, Saturday 23rd of June
Another Win for Scott Contessa Team
Elinor Barker wins the latest round of the Women’s Team Series at Nazeby
The finish of the Women’s Team Race Series event, held at Naseby with generous sponsorship from Duncan Murray’s Wines and organised by the Welland Valley CC, proved to have a sting in the tail as Eve Dixon (Champion Systems/Maxgear RT), although crossing the line first, was demoted to 18th place after what the race commissaire thought was an irregularity.
This course usually provides some good racing with its rolling roads but for some reason the riders, for two laps at least, almost ambled along which had the unfortunate outcome of allowing the men’s race to catch them so the race was stopped to allow the men in the break to get by and it was here that doubt crept in as to whether Eve had taken advantage of that when she broke clear with four miles of the race remaining.
The main hill on the course whittled the bunch down each lap; Siobhan McNamara (Vivelo Bikes) crashed with 38 miles covered thankfully without any serious injuries. After 24 miles, Elinor Barker (Scott Contessa Epic) tried to get away but was only allowed two miles of freedom before she was reeled in. Amy Roberts also of Scott Contessa Epic, tried a few miles later but again was brought back.
Louise Mahe (Mulebar Girls) was the next to attack with Rebecca Heath (VC St Raphael) getting across to her and this break lasted for 5 miles before the bunch brought them back.
Sarah Byrne (Cycle Premier-Kovert) was in most of the action all race, seemingly bringing back riders on her own. But the riders were now just concerned with that final mile with its long uphill finishing drag and so the race came to a conclusion not endorsed by all riders.

Lucy Shows her Jersey
Lucy Garner, Node 4 Giodana won the Darley Moor edition of the Women’s Team Race Series using her well known sprint ahead of the breakaway group after winning the two intermediate sprints as well.
Disappointingly a small field faced the 22 laps of this well know Derby course which left Team Series points in the bin; although overcast it was warm with sunshine later making an appearance. With 2 laps covered Lucy attacked but was brought back then it was the turn of Charlotte Colclough, For Viored RT but again was taken back; Karla Boddy, High Wycombe CC also attacked and was away for 2 laps before she was also reeled in to a bunch that was certainly looking towards a sprint finish.
Sprinting to take the final prime with 10 laps to go Lucy Garner just carried on and seeing the danger three riders got across to her, Karla Boddy, Joanne Smith, Maxgear RT and Jessie Walker Matrix Fitness.
